What time is 9:30 AM Pacific in London and Tokyo? (the DST week trap)

Convert 9:30 AM Pacific across New York, London and Tokyo through UTC — and survive the October week when Europe leaves DST before the US.

SwiftCalcKit · Updated October 22, 2026

Short answer

Convert through UTC, never zone-to-zone: 9:30 AM PDT (UTC−7) is 16:30 UTC, which is 12:30 PM in New York, 5:30 PM in London during BST, and 1:30 AM the next day in Tokyo. The trap is DST: Europe switches on October 25, 2026 while the US waits until November 1, so the same call shifts by an hour for one week.

Scope and assumptions

Our team learned this the hard way: a quarterly call that worked all summer fell apart the week Europe left DST before the US. The fix is a habit — convert through UTC, never zone-to-zone. Take the source time to UTC with its offset, then apply the target zone's offset, and daylight saving time stops being a surprise.

What is a time zone converter?

A time zone converter translates a clock time between zones using UTC as the anchor. The hard part is not the arithmetic — it is daylight saving time, which switches on different dates in the US and Europe and silently moves recurring meetings.

How time zone conversion works

Target time = source time − source offset + target offset (with each zone's DST status applied)

UTC offset explained for meetings

Every zone's offset is its difference from UTC — New York at UTC−4 is four hours behind it, Tokyo at UTC+9 is nine hours ahead.

Worked example: convert PST to EST to GMT (and Tokyo)

A distributed team holds a weekly sync at 9:30 AM Los Angeles time. In October 2026, Los Angeles is on PDT (UTC−7):

Zone Offset (Oct 2026) Local time
Los Angeles UTC−7 9:30 AM Tue
UTC — 4:30 PM Tue
New York UTC−4 12:30 PM Tue
London UTC+1 (BST) 5:30 PM Tue
Tokyo UTC+9 1:30 AM Wed

The Tokyo colleague joins at 1:30 in the morning — that single row is usually enough to reschedule the recurring slot.

When does Europe leave DST before the US? The week the offsets break

Europe ends DST on the last Sunday of October (October 25, 2026); the US ends it on the first Sunday of November (November 1, 2026). For one week, London sits on UTC+1 while New York is still UTC−4. The same 9:30 AM PDT call becomes:

6:30 PM London (UTC+1, CET) — still 12:30 PM New York (UTC−4, EDT)

Anyone who hard-coded "5:30 London" from the calendar invite will either miss the call or assume the invite is wrong. Recurring meetings that straddle a DST boundary need the invite regenerated, not trusted.

The mismatch week, in our experience, is the one that catches every recurring invite; somebody always misses the first call of the season. We now keep a reminder two Sundays ahead to regenerate anything that crosses the Atlantic, and the missed-call complaints stopped entirely.

The DST mismatch week October 2026 (and March 2027)

The mirror-image problem arrives in March. The US springs forward on the second Sunday of March (March 14, 2027); the EU waits until the last Sunday (March 28, 2027). For those two weeks, the same 9:30 AM Los Angeles call reads:

9:30 AM PDT (UTC−7) = 16:30 UTC = 12:30 PM New York (EDT) and 4:30 PM London (still GMT, UTC+0) — one hour earlier than the autumn pattern.

Once London moves to BST on March 28, the invite shows 5:30 PM again. And the southern hemisphere inverts everything: in October, Sydney is on AEDT (UTC+11), so the Tuesday call is already Wednesday morning there. The operational rule is the same as for autumn — regenerate recurring invites after each transition instead of trusting last season's.

The offset table worth memorizing

Zone Standard DST
UTC / GMT +0 —
US Eastern −5 −4 (EDT)
US Central −6 −5 (CDT)
US Mountain −7 −6 (MDT)
US Pacific −8 −7 (PDT)
London +0 +1 (BST)
Central Europe +1 +2 (CEST)
Tokyo +9 —

Arizona (outside the Navajo Nation) and Hawaii never leave standard time; most of Asia, Africa and South America observe no DST at all.

EST in October is the most expensive typo in scheduling

  1. Writing "EST" for a meeting held between March and November — it is EDT.
  2. Converting zone-to-zone instead of through UTC and compounding a sign error.
  3. Forgetting the date can roll over — a US evening call is tomorrow afternoon in Sydney.
  4. Assuming DST transitions align between the US and EU. They do not, for one week every autumn and one every spring.

FAQ

Q: How do I convert a time between zones? Anchor on UTC: convert the source time to UTC using its offset, then apply the target zone's offset.

Q: What is 9:30 AM Pacific in New York, London and Tokyo? 12:30 PM New York, 5:30 PM London (BST), 1:30 AM next day Tokyo.

Q: Why did my Europe call shift by an hour this week? Europe leaves DST on October 25, 2026; the US leaves it November 1 — one week of mismatched offsets.

Q: Which zones never observe DST? Most of Asia, and in the US Arizona (except the Navajo Nation) plus Hawaii stay on standard time year-round.

Q: Is it EST or EDT in October? EDT until November 1, 2026; writing EST for a summer meeting is the most common scheduling error.

Q: What time is it in UTC? UTC has no offset and no DST; every conversion passes through it.

Q: How do I schedule across the international date line? Work in UTC dates, then convert — a Tuesday evening in California can already be Wednesday afternoon in Sydney.

Q: Do flight arrival times need conversion? Yes — tickets show local time at each end; the elapsed flight time is a separate calculation.
