What day of the week is October 20, 2026? The doomsday shortcut

Find the weekday of any date with the 2026 doomsday anchor — plus the year's three Friday-the-13ths and the leap-year rules that break four-year assumptions.

Short answer

The weekday of any Gregorian date follows from counting days mod 7 from a known anchor. For 2026 the anchor is the doomsday — Saturday: 4/4, 6/6, 8/8, 10/10 and 12/12 all fall on Saturdays, so October 20, 2026 is a Tuesday and July 4, 2026 is a Saturday. Leap years break the every-four-years assumption: century years are leap only when divisible by 400.

Scope and assumptions

Applies to Gregorian calendar dates; historical dates before a country's Gregorian adoption follow local rules. This page is informational.

I use the doomsday anchor because mental weekday math otherwise fails me every March. Weekdays follow from counting days modulo 7: pick one known anchor date, count forward or back, and the remainder gives the weekday. For 2026 the anchor is one memorable Saturday.

What is a day-of-the-week calculator?

A day-of-the-week calculator finds the weekday of any Gregorian date, past or future. The method is modular arithmetic from a known anchor — and for 2026 the anchor is one memorable day.

How the weekday formula works

Weekday = (anchor weekday + days from anchor) mod 7

Worked example: the doomsday rule for 2026 explained

The doomsday rule gives one memorable date per year — the doomsday — on which a fixed set of easy dates always falls. For 2026 it is Saturday:

Doomsday dates (2026) Weekday
4/4, 6/6, 8/8, 10/10, 12/12 Saturday
Jan 3 (common years) / Jan 4 (leap) Saturday
Feb 28 (common) / Feb 29 (leap) Saturday
Jul 11, Nov 7 Saturday

From the anchor, every other date is a short count. October 10, 2026 is a Saturday, so October 20, 2026 is a Tuesday — 10 days later, and 10 mod 7 = 3, so Saturday + 3 = Tuesday.

What day was July 4, 2026?

Second example: July 4 is 3 days before July 11 (a doomsday), so July 4, 2026 is a Saturday.

Friday the 13th dates in 2026

A Friday the 13th needs the 13th to fall one day before a doomsday (Saturday the 14th). In 2026 that happens three times:

Date Check
Feb 13, 2026 Feb 14 is a Saturday doomsday
Mar 13, 2026 Mar 14 is a Saturday doomsday
Nov 13, 2026 Nov 14 is a Saturday doomsday

Three in one year is the maximum the Gregorian calendar allows.

The leap-year trap

The "every four years" rule is incomplete. Century years are leap years only when divisible by 400: 1900 was not a leap year; 2000 was; 2100 will not be. Any mental weekday math that crosses those boundaries drifts by a day if the rule is applied naively. Within a century the weekday pattern repeats on a 28-year cycle, but the century correction resets it.

What day will my birthday fall on?

Run the same count from this year's doomsday: the weekday moves forward one day in a common year and two across a leap day, so a birthday drifts through the week over a four-year cycle.

Before the calendar switched

Weekday questions about old events need the right calendar. Britain and its colonies switched from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar in September 1752, dropping eleven days — Wednesday, September 2 was followed by Thursday, September 14. George Washington's birthday moved from February 11 (Julian) to February 22 (Gregorian) in the process, and Greece did not switch until 1923.

So "what day of the week was it" has two possible answers for any date before a country's adoption: one under the Julian calendar, one under the Gregorian. For modern scheduling and recent history the Gregorian rules above are all you need; for genealogy or historical research, check which calendar the source document used.

The practical boundary for most readers: anything on or after the twentieth century is Gregorian everywhere that matters, so the doomsday anchor works without adjustment. The switch dates worth remembering are Britain and its colonies in 1752, the Soviet Union in 1918, and Greece in 1923 — the last European holdout. Documents dated within a year of any switch are the ambiguous ones, and local archives note the dual dating convention (for example "11/21 September 1752") when both calendars appeared side by side.

The doomsday anchor is one Saturday: use the Day of the Week Calculator and weekday tool to check any date in 2026. For the full walkthrough, see whether your birthday falls on a weekend next year.

What changed in September 1752?

  1. Assuming leap years come every four years without the century exception.
  2. Mixing the week-start convention (ISO Monday vs US Sunday) into the weekday label — the label itself is unaffected.
  3. Counting across a leap day without adding the extra day.
  4. Applying Gregorian rules to dates before a country's calendar reform.
