What ISO week is October 20, 2026? Why 2026 has 53 weeks

ISO 8601 week numbers explained: why week 1 contains the first Thursday, why 2026 has 53 weeks, and where US payroll numbering disagrees.

SwiftCalcKit · Updated October 22, 2026

Short answer

ISO 8601 weeks start on Monday, and week 1 is the week containing the year's first Thursday. October 20, 2026 falls in ISO week 43 (Monday October 19 to Sunday October 25). Because January 1, 2026 is a Thursday, 2026 has 53 ISO weeks — week 53 runs December 28–31 — and January 1, 2027 also belongs to week 53 of 2026. US Sunday-based numbering disagrees at year boundaries.

Scope and assumptions

ISO week numbering is a standard, but many US payroll and reporting systems use Sunday-based or January-1-anchored weeks instead. Confirm which system a report or payslip uses. This page is informational.

Payroll once asked me why the same date showed up as week 53 on one report and week 1 on another. ISO 8601 weeks start on Monday, and week 1 is the week containing the first Thursday of the year — everything else follows from those two rules, including why two systems disagree.

What is a week number calculator?

A week number calculator maps a date to its ISO 8601 week: weeks start Monday, and week 1 is the week containing the year's first Thursday. Payroll, shipping and sprint planning all lean on it, and the year boundaries are where it gets interesting.

How ISO week 1 and the first Thursday rule work

  1. Weeks start on Monday.
  2. Week 1 contains the first Thursday of the year — equivalently, the week containing January 4.

Worked example: October 20, 2026

January 1, 2026 is a Thursday, so the week of December 29, 2025 – January 4, 2026 is ISO week 1 of 2026. Three days of that week belong to the previous calendar year — that is intended, not an error.

October 20, 2026 is a Tuesday, so its ISO week runs Monday, October 19 – Sunday, October 25, 2026. Counting weeks from week 1 (starting December 29, 2025):

Week 43 starts Monday, October 19, 2026 — October 20, 2026 is ISO week 43.

Why does 2026 have 53 ISO weeks?

A year has 53 ISO weeks when it starts on a Thursday (or, in a leap year, on a Wednesday). January 1, 2026 is a Thursday, so:

Weeks Dates (2026)
Week 1 Dec 29, 2025 – Jan 4, 2026
Week 52 Dec 21 – Dec 27, 2026
Week 53 Dec 28 – Dec 31, 2026

Which year does January 1, 2027 belong to?

Two consequences planners hit every year:

  • January 1, 2027 is still ISO week 53 of 2026 — its week began Monday, December 28, 2026.
  • 2020 was also a 53-week year (January 1 fell on a Wednesday, and 2020 was a leap year).

US week number vs ISO week number: why they disagree

US payroll and reporting often use a different convention: weeks starting Sunday, or week 1 anchored to January 1 (the spreadsheet default). The same date can be week 43 under ISO and week 44 under a Sunday-based calendar, and January 1, 2027 is week 1 of 2027 in Excel's WEEKNUM while ISO files it in week 53 of 2026. Payslips, quarterly reports and shipping manifests each pick one — check which before comparing numbers across systems.

Where week numbers show up

ISO weeks are the default numbering in much of Europe: German and EU payroll runs on ISO weeks, shipping manifests and bill-of-lading references use ISO week stamps, and project schedulers anchor two-week sprints to Monday starts because an ISO week is always seven clean days.

Spreadsheets are where the conventions collide. Excel's WEEKNUM starts week 1 on January 1 by default, while ISOWEEKNUM follows the standard — the two functions disagree for several days every January and December. If a report pulls from both, the weekly totals will not reconcile. Fix the convention once, document it in the report header, and the 53-week years stop being surprises.

Week numbers need the Thursday rule: use the Week Number Calculator and ISO tool to place any date in its ISO week. The complete guide covers what week of the semester it is.

The reporting errors that break weekly comparisons

  1. Assuming January 1 is always week 1 — under ISO it can belong to the previous year's week 52 or 53.
  2. Mixing ISO and Sunday-based week numbers in one report.
  3. Forgetting that 53-week years exist and break week-over-week comparisons.
